Cedar Shingle Products

ShingleTec.co.uk’s product partner, Vincent Timber, is one of the UK’s largest specialist suppliers of Western Red Cedar Shingles and Shakes, Western Red Cedar, Cape Cod – a high quality maintenance free wood cladding system, Siberian Larch, Thermowood plus much more.

Vincent Timber’s Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) Shingles and shakes come from responsibly managed and renewable forests. Slow growing and naturally durable, Western Red Cedar has one of the longest life spans of any North American softwood. It produces long lengths of timber with true, straight grain. It is free from pitch and its heartwood has natural decay resistance. Its low density gives it an insulation value superior to most other species. Light weight, easy to work, easy to finish, possessing outstanding dimensional stability, Western Red Cedar is a preferred wood for nearly all purposes where attractive appearance or resistance to weather is important.

Oak and Sweet Chestnut

In addition to the use of Western Red Cedar Shingles and Shakes, ShingleTec can also advise and assist with projects where Oak and Sweet Chestnut Shakes are required.

Oak Shakes are a hardwood alternative to Western Red Cedar. They require no treatment as Oak naturally has high durability.

The wood of the Chestnut Tree is also extremely hard wearing. It also retains good flexibility. This makes it easy to work with and the wood shows only minimal contraction - it's an ideal external cladding option.

Preserving the beauty of Shingles

Western Red Cedar Shingles are naturally extremely durable and are capable of delivering a life expectancy in excess of fifty years if installed correctly. However, natural UV will alter the look of a newly installed Shingle. changing it from a warm woody honey colour to silvery grey. For most architects and specifiers this metamorphosis is equally attractive, however some may wish to maintain the original appearance of the Shingle.

From June/July 2011, Tanalith M will be available in the UK. It  is a clear wood preservative which does not alter the appearance of the natural timber and is extremely effective at preventing the development of naturally occurring staining fungi, thereby helping to maintain the clean and fresh appeal of timber for longer.

TANALITH M has been performance tested to European Standards and has also been thoroughly trialled in realistic field conditions and with appropriate timber species for European markets. The results for this new metal free preservative are extremely exciting in providing potential customers and the specification market with a brand new choice for the protection and maintenance of out of ground contact, decorative applications such as Shingles.
